Beth Norton

Attorney

Beth Norton is the founding attorney of Norton Health Law. Before starting her firm, Beth served as a nurse in various leadership positions in two Virginia hospitals. After encountering the many challenges healthcare providers and patients face in the healthcare environment, however, Beth decided to pursue a career in healthcare law and obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia. After serving on corporate healthcare and healthcare litigation teams for other prestigious Virginia firms, Beth realized her true passion was in patient-focused legal advocacy. She has devoted her firm to fighting for the rights of patients in consumer healthcare and assists clients in areas of estate planning, elder law, disability insurance, consumer healthcare litigation, insurance claims, and probate. Her experience representing the corporate side of healthcare law lends her clients a unique competitive advantage through a full understanding of how disputes are handled. Having trained for several years with some of the very best healthcare attorneys in Virginia, Beth is uniquely equipped with the experience and knowledge necessary to advocate for patients, elders, and those with special needs in Virginia.

Being a nurse and nurse-leader, Beth learned the importance of compassion as well as the needs and challenges people face in the healthcare setting, particularly late in life. It also trained her to distill difficult medical concepts into language that her patients without clinical training could easily understand. This skill has served her well in communicating difficult legal concepts to her clients throughout her broader career. Her nursing experience also afforded her a clinician’s perspective of the needs and challenges of the healthcare system as a whole. It was her experience with these challenges that led her to pursue a career in healthcare policy and as a healthcare legal advocate

In 2011, Beth began her health law career by enrolling at the University of Virginia School of Law. While she was in law school in Charlottesville, she met and began dating her now-husband David. After graduating from UVA in 2014, she moved back to Norfolk to begin her work as an associate on the healthcare litigation and corporate healthcare teams at Kaufman & Canoles, P.C. She continued her long-distance relationship with David for 3 years until they married in 2017, at which time Beth moved back to Charlottesville and took a position as an associate on the corporate healthcare team at Hancock Daniel & Johnson in Richmond. Her experience with these two prestigious firms provided her with even greater insight into the challenges associated with healthcare delivery as well as invaluable experience and knowledge involving healthcare transactions, litigation, regulations, and risk management.

While Beth primarily represented healthcare providers when practicing with these firms, she enjoyed volunteering her personal, pro bono time representing individual clients in disability and other healthcare-related cases. She continues to volunteer a significant amount of her time to pro bono representation, which she finds extremely fulfilling and rewarding.

In her free time, Beth enjoys cooking, baking, and gardening at her and David’s home in Earlysville, Virginia. She also enjoys practicing yoga and will soon complete her 200-hour yoga teacher training at the Elements Hot Yoga studio in Charlottesville. One of her favorite things to do is hiking the trails of Charlottesville and the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains.

Most of all, Beth loves spending time with her family, including David and their four girls. Cori, now 26 years-old, serves Norton Health Law as a paralegal, and Cameron, now 20, is a performing arts student at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia. David’s daughter Gabi is 20 years-old, works at the Elements Hot Yoga studio in Charlottesville, and is completing her 200-hour teacher training alongside Beth. Hailey is 17-years-old and will be graduating from Albemarle High School in 2021.
